Merve BOZBIYIK

I am a postdoctoral researcher at Mälardalen University (MDU) (Västerås, Sweden). I previously worked as a teaching and research assistant for six years at Middle East Technical University (METU) (Ankara, Türkiye), and as a visiting doctoral researcher at the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM) (Madrid, Spain).

My research focuses on the relationship between interactional practices and data-led, evidence-based implications for professionals. I have worked on classroom discourse, English Medium Instruction (EMI), teacher education, medical interaction, and wellbeing in education. In doing so, I document meaning-making and knowledge-building practices using multimodal Conversation Analysis (CA), explore participants’ viewpoints through thematic and ethnographic analysis, and examine the underlying principles of knowledge-building through Legitimation Code Theory (LCT). I typically begin my research with “unmotivated looking” and an emic perspective grounded in multimodal CA, and then expand toward a broader understanding of teaching and learning activities through qualitative methodologies.

Collaboration is central to my academic work. I value working with passionate, experienced, and open-minded researchers, and engaging with diverse methodologies, educational settings, and forms of professional development. In line with this perspective, I have been a member of different research groups (e.g., MIND, DISCORE), a regular attendee and presenter at data sessions and conferences (see my Talks), and have co-authored publications with colleagues (see my Publications). I have also been actively involved in multiple research projects (see my Projects) since my undergraduate years. I continue to expand my collaborations and strengthen my engagement with the research-practice interface in Türkiye, Spain, Sweden, and beyond (see my Experience).
